I Walk Another Day

I walk the streets
This ancient town
Terraced homes
Cobbled roads
All connected
None alone
When winter’s rains
Come tumbling down
Shops all shuttered
Doors shut tight
I recall the tune of evening prayers
Psalms of David
Beside lite rail
I wake the cats
Who own the night
I heard the younger children laugh
They have no need of smarter phones
At night in mother’s, father’s home
I took the well worn
Limestone path
You turn one way
Then you turn round
To find you are in center town
The stairs here lead you everywhere
Like snakes and ladders
At a village fair
Which flute did he play alone?
Which stones did he pry from the sand?
When Philistines did plague the land
Will we ever know?
I hope we can
What other shepherds followed ancient paths?
When David faced Goliath’s wrath
I eat and drink
I sleep I rise
I write I sing
I close my eyes
The Angels have not had their say
I wake
I walk another day
