A Cowboy’s Prayer

Oh Lord please lend me your ear

Hear of a cowboy’s fear

You may think my prayer is deranged

You may think I’m quite insane

Protect the roundup here this year

And don’t forget my favorite steer

Have mercy upon new life

Defend us from grief and strife

Oh Lord my herd behold

For my family, a sack of gold

I ask for ten cents a pound

The price it cannot go down

Look kindly upon my kin

It’s your land we wander in

Punish the wicked and the cheat

And this we bless the food we eat

It's you who created all

Don’t let fires rise and fall

Have mercy on the newborn calf

Guide us with your staff

From December through to March

We ride through deserts parched

Send us a cloud to lead the way

That’s the last word I have to say

Oh Lord please lend me your ear

Hear of a cowboy’s fear

You may think my prayer deranged

You may think I’m quite insane

Extra verse, not used:

Protect us from sleet and snow

May our herds forever grow

And from disaster shield

We are your lilies of the field
